An advanced skill in No-Limit Texas Holdem is the advertising play. An advertising play is one in which you give information to your opponents, but the information you give is misleading, so that you can use it against your opponents later. The most common type of advertising is to turn over a big bluff right before you decide to switch gears and play tight for a while. You can also advertise if you’ve had a run of strong hands by showing that you were betting from strength in order to set up bluffs down the road.
The idea of advertising in poker is to change the way the table reacts to you. If you feel you’re not getting paid off on your good hands, you may want to show a few bluffs to let opponents know that you may not have a monster every time you bet. If you’re getting called too much, you may want to bet right out when you flop the nut flush, then show it if everyone folds. When you decide to try advertising, keep these tips in mind.
Commercial Time on the Poker Network is Cheap
You don’t have to spend a lot on advertising. You can risk $20 in a $3/$6 blind no-limit game in order to pick up a pot nobody wants, then flip over your 64 off suit on a board of Qh Qc Jh. Sure you only bet because it was obvious everyone was afraid of the flop, and sure you only risked 10 percent of your stack, but what people will remember when you bet $200 on the river of a Qh 3s Qc Js Ts board holding QJ, is that you ran a stone cold bluff.
Advertising Only Works When People are Tuned In.
Especially in low blind games and online poker, players may only be paying attention to their own hands and not to yours. It’s amazing how often a player who has sat at the table for three hours without playing a hand finally raises and gets called in multiple spots. If players aren’t observant, this is great for you, but it also means advertising is a waste of time. These players play their own hands and they don’t care what you have or what you’re representing.
You Can Only Get Customers if you Have a Loyal Viewership
You need to build up an image through your advertising plays and this takes time. If you are at a tournament table that is due to break, you may want to hold off advertising until you are moved to a table you are going to be at for a while. Similarly, if your cash game is short handed, you might want to wait for a full table before trying to establish your image.
Advertising is a key tactic in No-Limit Texas Holdem poker. It’s no good to switch gears if nobody notices. As with any poker strategy, using advertising selectively and judiciously will confer you a significant advantage in your poker games.
