How Does OG Randy Couture STILL Do It at Age 44?
By Paul Greenhill
Here’s the burning question that MMA critics have been asking themselves since the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) 74 took place on Saturday night: how does a 44 year old man continue to
perform at such a high performance level against younger competitors?
Truth be told, I’ve often wondered about that same question at times myself, but for a different reason that most of those MMA critics. Most of those MMA critics want to know how OG (older grappler) Randy Couture continues to deliver high-caliber performances, event-after-event, when they’re all ready to notice that he’s lost a step, take the opportunity to throw an H2O (He’s Too Old!) Bomb in his direction (again) and finally proclaim the end of his career (also again)!
But for those of us who are Randy Couture fans because he’s one of us (a certified OG, fully inducted into The Wise Grappler Hall of Fame), we KNOW why he continues to perform at the level that he does and the answer is very simple.
The reason that he continues to dominate his division at 44 is his self-determination!
Randy has made up in his mind that he and he alone will define himself and determine when his career is over, not some critic sitting on the sideline waiting to call him “washed up!” Randy lives true to his own convictions and will continue to fight (and excel) until he feels that he can’t fight anymore. He doesn’t need critics to tell him that he’s not the same athlete that he was 10 years ago. And they’re right that he’s not the same athlete that he was 10 years ago because he 10 years wiser, works more efficiently, and has learned a lot more training tips and tricks within the past 10 years that only comes with age and experience. Unfortunately, that’s something that critics and Young Punks tend
to underestimate or aren’t OLD enough to figure out on their own.
Randy Couture serves as a great role model for everyone (both athlete and couch potato alike) that’s been told by someone they’re too old to achieve a lifetime goal and how any chance at success is impossible. We should appreciate him and his performances while we can…because we may NEVER see another athlete like him in MMA ever again!
